Please forget the "Experienced Team"1

I cannot hear it anymore, the "experienced team" selling proposition, as if it would have some kind of real value, especially if everybody uses it unconditionally...I happen to have several opportunities to be involved in start-ups either as angel investor, jury member in incubators and pitching competitions, or just as personal interest, and I have not heard one single start-up yet which is not claiming to have an "experienced team"...each time I hear a new pitch, mostly to raise money and convince of the value of the new company, everybody claims to be blessed with such a absolutely "experienced" group of people...Obviously, if everybody claims the same, and if start-ups fail anyhow, there must be something else, which is overlooked...

Personally, hearing such claim without a better holistic rational behind is the very one thing that would prevent me from investing...Experience, if not well used, is very dangerous. Do not understand me wrong, it is not that you absolutely have to be inexperienced...it is just that "Experience" is a double-faced weapon, depending on in which hands it is. I will explain you why. No two systems are exactly the same. One of the main reasons why people make mistakes, even very big mistakes, is that they "learnt" a certain strategy and to perform certain actions in a specific system, and if they had the desired outcome, they accurately repeat such actions in the next "similar" system, the next time they find themselves in a situation that reminds them the previous one, where they were successful. This time, they are more confident, they have "experience" already, they did something that worked before and do not need to think twice...but as I mentioned above, no two systems are the same, and failing to see those factors (internal, external, recognizable, hidden, foreseeable, unforeseeable...) that perturbs the new system is such a way that, without taking them into the proper account ( and in most cases it is rather the combination of several almost unnoticeable factors whose interaction leads to a more complex series of events whose impact is difficult to predict...), the result will be totally different...and you will not in some cases even understand why...

History does not repeat itself, it is just the errors that we make that repeat themselves, because we fail to see that the same strategy does not work 1:1 in the new system.

Beware Experience!
